Public Charging Stations

I want to type today about a scary new trend that is affecting people all over the world: juice jacking. Now, I know what you’re thinking – juice jacking sounds like a weird smoothie trend or something, but it’s actually a type of cyber attack that can seriously compromise your personal information.

Juice jacking occurs when hackers install malware onto public charging stations, allowing them to steal personal information from anyone who uses the station to charge their phone. The way it works is pretty simple – when you plug your phone into the compromised station, the malware is transferred to your device, giving the hacker access to things like your emails, contacts, and even your bank account information.

One example of juice jacking that made headlines in 2019 occurred at the Los Angeles International Airport. A group of hackers set up fake charging stations throughout the airport that looked and functioned like regular charging stations, but were actually loaded with malware. When unsuspecting travelers plugged in their phones, the malware was transferred to their devices, giving the hackers access to all sorts of personal information.

Now, I don’t know about you, but the idea of someone stealing my personal information through a public charging station is pretty terrifying. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from juice jacking. First and foremost, try to avoid using public charging stations whenever possible. Instead, invest in a portable charger that you can carry with you and use to charge your phone on the go. If you absolutely have to use a public charging station, be sure to use your own charging cable rather than one that is provided by the station. Finally, make sure that your phone’s software is up-to-date, as this can help to protect against some types of malware.

So there you have it, juice jacking is a real and growing threat that you need to be aware of. By taking a few simple precautions, you can help to ensure that your personal information stays safe and secure. Stay safe out there, have a great weekend and I’ll catch you in the next post!
